As we all know, seatbelts kill way more people than they save. Case in point, the other day as I drove to the store with the kids, Autumn managed to entangle herself in her belt so thoroughly that she couldn't get out by herself. She had the buckle released but it was wrapped around her waist in a knot and she was screaming at me to help her. Luckily I didn’t crash because she probably would have been chopped in two. Once we arrived at the store, I tried to get her out but when I pulled the belt, it just tightened more- which made her hysterical. I still hoped that if she could just calm down she would be able to wriggle her way out so I left her and Hannah in the car while I took the other 2 inside. While inside, the girls (I found out later) had started to pray and I got the answer in my brain as to how to free her. I got back to the car and Hannah had been helpful enough to tell Autumn that if she was trapped for too long she would die. That didn’t seem to calm her down much. Autumn was screaming “Cut it!” over and over but that didn’t seem like a cost effective release strategy to me. Instead, I lifted her body and twisted her in the air in a cartwheel like manner. Unfortunately, I did it the wrong way and so the seatbelt squeezed her tighter. I reversed the air cartwheel and two spins later, Autumn was free. So as you may have guessed, the moral of this story is never fasten your seatbelt. If you must, I have included a tutorial picture.

Wow! What a story! Glad your daughter is okay! I once drove all over town without fastening my daughter's carseat into the car. It was just sliding back and forth and I didn't even notice. I've never forgotten since.

ReplyDeleteNext time if you could include a tutorial pic of someone who ISN'T pregnant, maybe the rest of us could understand it better. Wow--that was quite a harrowing story! Thank goodness for your keen mind and your bravery (and the girls thinking to pray for help. How smart are they?!). Good work all around! My question is, how is it that your daughter gets all messed up in the seatbelt like that in the first place? I didn't even know that was possible?! Please monitor your children's buckling procedures more carefully in the future to avoid further crises like these. And by the way, I'll not be listening to your advice & will continue to buckle my child safely in his seat. Thanks anyway!
ReplyDeleteOkay, Jared, but what about when the po-lice man gives me a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt? (Like he did last Friday...) Can I refer him to your blog in my defense?
ReplyDeleteSuzanne, I wouldn't do that. But go ahead and check my new blog, "paying tickets is for stupids". It basically just says don't ever pay it. There's a very low chance you will get arrested.
